1 Hour Before Flight Time
Our 3-day expedition from Marrakech to Fes kicks off with a morning pick-up from your hotel or riad. We begin by crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi-n-Tichka pass. Our first major halt is at the historic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Here, we’ll explore this iconic fortified village and visit the nearby film studios, where international superstars have shot legendary blockbusters such as Gladiator and The Mummy.
After this cultural immersion, we proceed to Ouarzazate for a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, our route takes us through the palm-fringed Oasis of Skoura, a serene Berber village, before winding through the fragrant Valley of the Roses toward the town of Kelaat M’Gouna. We conclude the day’s drive at the breathtaking Dades Gorge, where we check into our hotel or riad for a delicious dinner and a well-earned overnight stay, marking the end of our first day on this desert journey.
The second day of this 3-day adventure promises an exhilarating plunge into the desert. We set off towards the dramatic Todra Gorges, stopping en route at the Berber settlement of Tinghir. The village’s name, derived from the indigenous Amazigh language, translates to “shoulder.” Historically, Tinghir served as a French military post during the colonial period.
Following a lunch break at a local café, we continue eastward to Erfoud, the celebrated capital of marble and fossils. We’ll make a stop at a stone workshop to admire the intricate fossilized pieces before traversing rugged, rocky terrain on our approach to the sweeping dunes of Merzouga. Upon arrival, a caravan of camels will be ready to carry you into the heart of the desert.
Enjoy a scenic camel trek over the golden sand dunes, pausing to capture the mesmerizing sunset with your camera (with a helping hand from your experienced guide). As dusk falls, we ride to our desert camp, where a traditional dinner is served under a blanket of brilliant stars. The night comes alive with rhythmic nomadic music, drumming, and dancing around a crackling campfire—bringing our second night to an unforgettable close.
Rise early on our final day to greet a spectacular sunrise over the dunes, followed by a hearty breakfast at the camp. We then mount our camels once more for the return trek to the edge of the desert, where our driver awaits to continue the overland journey to Fes.
Our route takes us through the verdant Ziz Valley, near Errachidia—the capital of the Tafilalt region—where we pause at a panoramic lookout to soak in the stunning vistas. We press on to Midelt, a town renowned for its apple harvests and its role as a bustling commercial center for the region’s agriculture, as well as a key hub for mining various minerals. After a lunch stop, we cross the Middle Atlas range, passing through cedar forests and Berber villages such as Imouzzer. We take a break amidst the trees to observe Barbary macaques living freely in their natural woodland habitat.
Our final notable stop is the charming alpine town of Ifrane, often nicknamed “the Switzerland of Morocco.” Its name comes from the Amazigh word for “caves.” Notably, Ifrane was ranked the world’s second-cleanest city in 2013, yet its true appeal lies in its beautiful outdoor surroundings. We’ll admire the iconic stone lion statue at the town’s center—a tribute to the predators that once inhabited this area—and appreciate the French-colonial architecture established here in 1929. Leaving Ifrane behind, we make our last stretch through small Berber communities before arriving in Fes, where we conclude our 3-day journey with an overnight stay at your hotel or riad.
