Itinerary

Day 1Fes - Ifran - Azrou - Arfoud - Erissani - Merzouga

Sahara tour from Fez to Marrakech: Today we have a full day’s journey through the diverse landscapes that make Morocco so unique. Pass through cedar and pine forests, keeping an eye out for Barbary apes. We’ll cross the Middle Atlas Mountains and pre-desert countryside with its deep gorges bordered by splendid oases of green palm groves, before arriving at the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. We spend the night in a desert inn (hotel), located right on the edge of the dunes. We dine in local style and spend the night there. Please note that all rooms at the desert inn are equipped with bathroom, shower and air conditioning. Day 1: Overnight in Merzouga (Auberge); Approximate travel time including stops: Fez to Merzouga, 9-10 hours.

Day 2Merzouga Area / Desert Berber Camp

Today you’re free until you set off on a camel safari in the late afternoon. Why not spend the morning exploring the undulating golden sands of the dunes. You can also relax by the pool or read a book on the shared sofa. We also offer an optional 4×4 safari in the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. Ask your general manager for more details and the current price of this exciting adventure. After picking up our travel bags containing the evening’s necessities, we set off for an hour’s camel ride to our desert camp deep in the dunes. Your local guides will teach you how to get on and off the camel and give you other safety tips. Don’t forget to ask them to teach you the trick of tying your turban to keep the desert sun off your face and add a little emotion to your photos. From your first cup of mint tea, you’ll receive a warm welcome to our desert camp.
Traditional dinner under the stars, prepared by our camel driver. In the evening, we’ll have time to listen to stories about life in this region and perhaps, if we’re lucky, we’ll be treated to some traditional drum music. Each Bedouin tent can accommodate around 4 people, but most people prefer to relax and enjoy the silence of a night under the starry desert sky. Mattresses, sheets and blankets are provided. For those traveling in winter (November-April), we strongly recommend a sleeping bag for extra warmth. As far as sanitary facilities are concerned, it’s back to nature. We’ll have breakfast on our return to the Merzouga inn. Day 2: Overnight in the Sahara desert (nomad camp); Approximate duration of trip: Merzouga to camp, 1hr:30mn (by camel).

Day 3Merzouga - Todra Gorges - Dades Valley.

Early in the morning, your camelman will wake you up to witness what could well be the most beautiful sunrise of your life. Afterwards, you’ll take a leisurely camel ride to the village of Merzouga. En route, you can’t fail to appreciate the unique beauty of the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes, which change with the light as the day progresses. After breakfast at the riad, you’ll set off for the Rissani, Tinghir and Todra gorges – the highest and narrowest in Morocco. You’ll have the opportunity to take a one-hour hike into the valley, where you’ll meet the locals and learn about the culture and geography. After lunch in the heart of the gorges, you’ll continue on to the Dades Valley, where you’ll see the majestic sand castles and astonishing rock formations known as “monkey fingers”. Overnight at a hotel in the Dades gorges.

Day 4 : Dades Valley - Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou - Tiz N’Tichka Pass - Marrakech.

This morning, we continue on the “Route des 1000 Kasbahs” to Ouarzazate, where we’ll take a lunch break. We continue on to the village of Aït Ben Haddou. Aït Ben Haddou is a wonderful example of a collection of kasbahs (a type of fortress). Carefully restored over the years and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is considered one of the best-preserved kasbah villages in Morocco. A few families still live here, but the majority of inhabitants have gradually moved to the neighboring village. As you tour the kasbah, you’ll lose yourself in the narrow, winding passages and feel the magical atmosphere of this incredible structure. You’ll continue over the spectacular Tizi n’ Tichka pass before descending past charming mountain villages, dense forests and green expanses to the ochre-hued city of Marrakech.
